Wild Nothing and Stars @ Headliners

If the first Sunday in October finds you looking for some unique, laid back, indie-pop you definitely need to check out the Stars/Wild Nothing Show @ Headliners. The new cd from Wild Nothing, "Gemini," has been receiving praise from the media and has it's roots in the Cocteau Twins sound of the 80's.
The show starts @ 8 and tickets can be purchased @ Ear-X or Wild & Woolly or through ticketweb.com. I recommend this show for those of you who miss that ethereal sound of bands like The Sundays, Cocteau Twins and even The Smiths.

Here is a weird and unofficial video for one of Wild Nothing's songs.

Tilted Kilt Open

The Tilted Kilt, located where the old Ernesto's and Oldenburg Brewery used to be in the Dutchman's area, is now open. They have not had an official opening but the place is already packed and doing great business. If you go ask for either Amanda or Heather ( Pictured) or my buddy Clinton working the bar.

Easier Expense Reports?

In our office I always hear people grumbling about having to do their expense reports. Well, it might just get easier soon.

Music Pick Of The Week - The National

The National has to be one of the best indie bands touring this year. Their new cd High Violet has gotten great reviews across the board from everyone from Pitchfork.com (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14203-high-violet/) to NME who gave it 8 out of 10 and Paste Magazine who gave it over an 8 rating (http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2010/05/the-national-high-violet.html). The Washington Post called High Violet, "It's methodical and smart, filled with inscrutable but deep-sounding ruminations on love and loss. Its twisty, intricate rhythms and lush orchestral passages would take lesser bands years to figure out."

This is not a summer drive with the top down cd it's more of a rainy day, dig deep type. I bought the cd the day it came out and find myself weeks later still listening to it. It's kind of like the Schindler's List of music, great art that you have to be in the right mindset for.

The National will be coming to Louisville in September to the Brown Theatre on Monday the 27th. Tickets are still available at $35 a shot.

Louisville Beer Store and Strange Brew

If you were a fan back in the day of those idiot brothers Bob & Doug McKenzie like I was then you should scamper down to the Louisville Beer Store Tonight. The Louisville Beer Store is located at 746 Market and will be showing the movie Strange Brew starting at 9pm. It's free and seating is limited so I suggest you get there early.

Two Unique And Fun Places To See A Movie This Summer

Every year The Palace Theatre does a movie series during the summer that's sponsored by The Leo. This year, as it was a couple of years ago, they are doing their Hitchcock Series. I've been going to these series every year and I think it's very cool to see a flick in a big historic theater like The Palace. The good thing about it is you get to see a movie with real cinema fans. Unlike most movie theaters these days the crowd is very polite and quiet. They have to be due to the fact that the theater is so big sometimes the sound isn't great. That really is the only negative thing I could say about this movie series. It's also one of the few places where you can sip on a beer and watch a classic flick. I believe it's still only $5 but don't quote me on that. This series begins this Friday and will show every Friday and Saturday until the end of August.

The other cool place to catch flicks this summer is the Iroquois Ampetheatre. I've never been to this one but the lineup of movies looks interesting. It's every Monday through September and it's absolutely free.

Another New Place In An Old Spot

This used to be a beach club place I knew nothing about. Now it looks like it's got some new owners.

Music Pick of the Week.

Last night I ventured out to one of my favorite neighborhoods in Louisville to see a highly praised new band out of Brooklyn. I've been hearing and reading all these very positive reviews of this unknown band, if you can call it a band since there are only two members. So off I went to Zanzabar in hopes of seeing something original. http://www.zanzabarlouisville.com/
If you haven't seen a show at Zanzabar then I suggest you get there really, really early due to the fact that there isn't a stage. It's simply an open space where the band plays with no elevation at all. When the band started people where literlly climbing the walls to get a glimps of them. While you're waiting for the band do yourself a favor and order the chicken cynthia. I was starving and per recommendation of one of the servers I got the chicken cynthia. Wow, I was not expecting this dish from such an unpretenious place. This place, in many, many ways is not your typical neighborhood bar.

Anyway... the band. When you get a chance go to Ear-Xtacy and pick up the new Sleigh Bells cd. How would I describe their sound....? Imagine if Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails got together with a cheeleading squad from Bring It On and they all got wasted on Tequila shots. From the first track to the last they kick you in the gut and as you double over it's a knee to the face. Let me just say that if you need some tunes to get your game face on before you enter the ring, this is the cd. The cd is called "Treats" and just look for a cd cover with, of all things, a cheerleader pyramid on it. Here is the Pitchfork review of it. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14251-treats/

Opening soon in Louisville is the new Tilted Kilt. I don't know much about the place but from what I know it's opening where the old Ernesto's used to be off of Dutchmans Lane. (Next to Panera Bread.) If you go let me know what it's like.
